The training which started on Thursday, 17th runs to Saturday, 19th November, 2016. PRAWA organized a three (3) days Secondary and Tertiary Institution Training of Peer Educators on Life Planning and Substance Abuse founded by UNODC and was held at PRAWA Conference Hall, Enugu.

The participants were welcome by Mr. Albert Oko who also introduced PRAWA and its mission as well as their vision step by step to the understanding of the participants. In attendance were 30 students with 5 accompanied staffs of each of the represented Schools and 5 NYSC members.

The training of the Peer Educator on Life Planning and Substance Abuse will help to create a positive change in schools in Enugu. Building on the knowledge that the most important influence on young people are their attitudes and behaviors of their peers, the Peer Educator Training Program and Life Planning training prepares young people from 3 Secondary Schools (Graceland, Lady Ibiam Girls, & Springs of Life secondary schools) and 3 Universities (National Open University, Godfrey Okoye University, Coal City University, & some NYSC Corp members) to use the Life Planning Skills and the positive power of peer influence to promote respect and good manners in their schools and beyond. Also, the training will help the participants to create a substance abuse free environments or communities.

At some point in the training, Pharmacist Nonso Maduka in an energetic outline educated the participants and staffs on the Danger of Substance Abuse and further examples the visible and invisible harms substance abuse that gradually kill the entire human body as they continue to increase the amount drugs they take to high up their sensation. While Prof. Gloria one of the facilitator took the participants on life planning communication and defense mechanism to help vulnerable victims to escape becoming a victim as well. Also, Mr. Jasper Ukachukwu handle the discussion and practical to open engaged the participants to express how to reject  the offer of going substance abuse without getting the person provoked or to feel insulted.

Further explanation on substance abuse, also known as drug abuse, is a patterned use of a drug in which the user consumes the substance in amounts or with methods which are harmful to themselves or others, and is a form of substance related disorder.

The training centers on educating the youths on the common Drugs most often associated with this term such as: Alcohol, Cigarette, Cannabis, Cocaine, Heroine, and Opioids. The exact cause of substance abuse seems to be pointing directly to drug use or over use, with theories including one of two: either a genetic disposition which is learned from others, or a habit which is developed by addiction, which eventually, manifest itself as a chronic devastating disease.

Substance abuse is a serious public health problem that affects almost every community and family in every way. That is the reason the Peer Educators were equipped with a life planning cleverness that will help them carryout the job of Drug Awareness Program Campaign in their various schools.  

Peer Educators training program which focuses on Life Planning and Substance Abuse. Peer Educators training is an effective strategy for building a well educated and sustainable peer education groups. Peer Educator training helps peer educators develop leadership skills to be able to successfully create and implement Anti-Drug Abuse Club in their campus and school.

There are different types of treatment for substance abuse. But the best is to prevent substance abuse in the first place in our schools and environment which are most important than anything else.

Finally, this program teaches Peer Educators to take action against prejudice by leading workshops and discussions with peers about the issues that will impact positively to their school. Their efforts will play a key role in creating an environment where differences are valued and respected.
