The PRAWA Drug Abuse Campaign received a boost on 6th March 2014, as one of the biggest secondary schools in Enugu town; Osisatech Girls’ Secondary school opened its doors to the PRAWA team represented by Nonso Maduka and Chibuzor Orame.
The two-hour programme which had about 352 students in attendance, focused on sensitizing the students on the dangers of drug abuse and its impact on the crime rate of every society. The facilitators started by testing the students’ knowledge on illicit drugs that can be found in Enugu Town. Using visual aids, the students were educated on the contents of most commonly abused drugs like Alcohol, Cigarettes and Marijuana; as well as their effects on users.
At the end of the programme, the Dean- Students Affairs of the Osisatech Girls’ Secondary School, Pharm. Nonso Ike thanked the PRAWA Team for coming and has this to say concerning the programme, ‘This programme should be sponsored by the Federal Government. It should be spread (replicated) throughout the federation thereby reducing the rate of crime in the society. It should be included as a sub-topic in the students’ Moral Instruction or Civic Education curriculum’.
On 19th and 20th March 2014, the campaign moved on to Springfield Comprehensive Secondary School, Osisatech Boys’ Secondary School and Jenkins Comprehensive College reaching out to 433 students.
Expressing their gratitude, the Springfield Comprehensive Secondary School authorities also requested that the programme should be carried out on regular basis for their students and teachers. The principal of the Osisatech Boys’ Secondary School added that drug abuse is becoming quite rampant among secondary school students in Enugu state and appealed that the sensitization programme should be implemented within remote communities. Copies of the PRAWA Illicit Drug and Drug Abuse Handbook were sold in all schools visited. In Osisatech Boys’ Secondary School, the PRAWA team donated few copies of the book to the school’s library.
