In November, 2014 the newly constituted Gender Unit and the training department of the Nigeria Police Force were the primary beneficiaries of activities geared towards enlightenment and capacity building on effective responses to Gender-based violence and HIV/AIDs. The project which was implemented by PRAWA and funded by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UNWOMEN); was driven by the desire to promote the accessibility of justice to women within the context of Gender Based Violence and HIV.
In addition to training fifty-eight (58) Police officers in Lagos state and Abuja on 1 and 16 December, 2014 respectively, the intervention yielded resource materials expected to entrench the culture of effective investigation and evidence documentation in cases of gender based violence by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). Furthermore, through information dissemination on available care centers for survivors of Gender based violence and HIV, the project facilitated better collaboration between the law enforcement organ and Gender Based Violence and HIV/AIDs treatment centers for effective care of victims.
