The training workshop for paralegals took place on the 21st and 22nd of March, 2017 at Planet Hotels and Event Centre in Lagos.
The workshop, facilitated by PRAWA under the Security and Justice Reform Programme Prison Reform Project, is a step towards improving access to justice for awaiting trial persons
The training focused on equipping paralegals with basic knowledge on the following areas: The Concept of Paralegalism, in the Nigerian Justice System, its Current Challenges and Opportunities, Introduction to Law and key Legal Principles, Understanding the Justice Delivery Chain and Possible Supporting Role of Paralegals in Prison and other Detention Centers, in Court, in the Community, Interviewing and Statement Taking Skills, Administering of Clients – In Take Forms/LACON Pro Bono Clearing House Forms, Communication and Documentation/Report Writing Skills, Working/interacting with children and Juveniles, Victims, Offenders (including special needs offenders), Victims of Gender-Based Violence and other Gender Issues, and Introduction to Restorative Justice Models among others.
At the end of the training, the trained paralegals were deployed back to their project states to commence their field work starting with interview and collection of data of ATPs without legal representation.
