As the country continues to stroke the flames of reforms, the Lang’ata Women’s Prisons in Kenya provide rehabilitation services for inmates still awaiting trial who, as at 6th July 2012, account for about 42% of the total inmate population.
Several regulations and national laws provide for rehabilitation of persons sentenced to imprisonment yet, there is hardly any mention of rehabilitation for persons on remand.
It is important to note that with the alarming population growth rate of Awaiting trial inmates in a lot of African countries and the inability of several African countries’ penal systems to provide quick administration of justice to criminal suspects, a lot of these inmates have to wait for years before they can access justice.
Unfortunately, most of them are kept in the same prisons with convicts but have no access to rehabilitation and other activities that could encourage personal development.
Since 2006, the Lang’ata Women’s prison has been rehabilitating Awaiting Trial Inmates through group counseling and vocational training. The aim is to ensure their personal development as they wait for their day in court.
